My daughter’s become a partial red-head

Those of you who remember how I agonized over my daughter’s wish to have her ears pierced will also remember how I promised not to cave in when other important decisions pop up in her life.

Here’s an excerpt from that posting: However, this does not mean that dear old dad will cave in to future requests before I am good and ready to sign off on them.

Requests like, "Dad, can I go out on a date?"

Or, "Dad, I want to host a slumber party."

Or, "Dad, I want a puppy." (That’s the new one going around the house. Good luck, Maura.)

Or, "Dad, my hair will really look great with pink and purple stripes."

Well, my daughter found a way around that final request: Just get mom to agree to it and blindside dad with it later. She didn’t ask for her hair to be pink with purple stripes, but it’s close …

As you can see, she has several locks of hair dyed red (I’m told with Kool-Aid). She also has a matching red streak on the other side of her head. And she’s still eight years from officially being a teenager!!

When Maura returned last weekend from a week of camping, I saw those red streaks immediately. My first thought was how it reminded me of pop singer Gwen Stefani’s pink hair, circa 2000.

My second thought was that hopefully this stage will go down the drain as quickly as that Kool-Aid washes out of her hair.

Eh, this is minor, Dad. Wait until your daughter wants to head out the door with a halter top and short shorts. THEN you can have a conniption. Heheh, it’s just the same old advice: Pick your battles.

the dying of hair will not fade with time if anything it worsens…wait until she wants to have brighter colours like pink, purple, or even green

I think it’s good for a young girl to experiment with this kind of harmless change in her appearance. It probably makes her feel special, and let’s face it, kool aid’ll wash out anyway. This seems to me like a healthy, safe way for your daughter to experiment with her body. Plus you can show her pictures later if she wants to get a tattoo on a whim.
